If you’re planning a Catholic wedding, you already know the Mass is the most important part of the day. It’s not just a beautiful tradition — it’s a blessed sacrament. A visible sign of God’s invisible grace.
Within the structure of the wedding Mass, there’s room for deeply personal and devotional elements — small traditions that reflect your faith, honor your family, and draw your heart closer to Christ.
As a Catholic wedding photographer serving York, PA. and surrounding areas within the Harrisburg Diocese, I’ve had the honor of documenting many sacred, quiet and meaningful moments within the Mass. These are a few traditions Catholic couples often choose to include.

After Communion, many Catholic couples choose to place a bouquet of flowers at the feet of the Blessed Virgin Mary — a visual act of entrusting their marriage to her maternal intercession.
This moment if often accompanied by a Marian hymn like Ave Maria or Salve Regina, and offers a peaceful, prayerful pause in the liturgy. Whether it’s a white rose or a full bouquet, this simple gesture speaks volumes: Be it done unto me according to Thy word.
It’s also a deeply photogenic moment — one of reverence, stillness, and devotion.
Some couples choose to venerate a crucifix during the Mass as a way of grounding their marriage in Christ’s sacrificial love. This moment often takes place after the processional, or after Communion, depending on your priest’s direction. The couple may kneel before the crucifix together, lay their hands upon it, or even kiss the feet of Christ on the cross.
It’s a powerful visual reminder that the Cross isn’t just a symbol — it’s the foundation. A Catholic marriage is meant to reflect Christ’s love for His Church: sacrificial, total, fruitful, and faithful. If this tradition resonates with you, talk to your priest ahead of time to include it reverently and seamlessly into the liturgy.

Though not part of the Mass itself, some couples gather their wedding party before the liturgy for a few minutes of intentional prayer. This could be as formal as the Liturgy of the Hours or as simple as praying a decade of the Rosary together. Some read Scripture, others pray spontaneously over one another — whatever invites peace and grace into the day.
It’s a grounding tradition that helps center everyone’s hearts on what’s truly happening — especially before the pace of the day picks up. As a photographer, I often witness this time as one of the most tender parts of the entire day — filled with reverence, nervous joy, and the quiet recognition that something holy is about to begin.
The music in your Nuptial Mass helps shape the tone of the liturgy — and invites everyone present into worship.
Whether you choose traditional Latin hymns, Marian pieces, or instrumental psalms, the right music elevates the sacredness of the sacrament. Your parish may have guidelines about what’s allowed during the liturgy, so speak with your music director during the planning process. And don’t be afraid to choose songs that reflect your devotion. I chose to have the Litany of the Saints during the offering for my wedding Mass, and it was one of my favorite parts!

Though it isn’t part of the ceremony, receiving the Sacrament of Reconciliation before your wedding day is one of the most powerful traditions a Catholic couple can embrace.
Some couples go to confession the night before; others set aside time earlier that week. A few even schedule private confession times for their entire wedding party. Beginning your marriage in a state of grace is a quiet but transformative way to say “We want this to start with Christ at the center.”
A Catholic wedding is already beautiful because of what it is — the union of two souls with Christ. But these sacred traditions help slow things down, create room for prayer, and draw the hearts of everyone present back to what matters: the vows, the altar, and the grace being poured out.
